I’ve made journalism accessible to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD):
- June 2020: I co-wrote this questionnaire asking people to share stories about intellectual and developmental disability services in Arizona with us.
- July 2020: I helped run a virtual storytelling event to include people with I/DD in our reporting, and to showcase artist monologues. Here’s parts 1 and 2 of the event, and a piece I co-wrote about how community storytelling informed our journalism.
- Nov. 2020: I spent hours reading stories aloud to make online audio recordings so our stories were accessible to people with I/DD, in both our original text and plain-language translations of the articles in the investigation. Hear my voice reading these recordings:
- Arizona Promised to Help People With Developmental Disabilities. But Some Had to Wait a Long Time. Some Did Not Get Help at All. — original text audio, plain-language audio
- He Has a Developmental Disability. He Needs a Helper. Arizona Said He Could Wear Diapers Instead. — original text audio, plain-language audio
- She Needs a Device to Talk to People. Arizona Has Not Given It to Her. It Has Been 1.5 Years. — original text audio, plain-language audio
- “I Thought Arizona Was Rated High for Disability Services, But That Is Wrong.” — original text audio, plain-language audio
- Dec. 2020: I helped run a final Zoom event sharing stories back with the community.
- My team’s work was featured in Nieman Lab. I also featured this accessibility work in my Nieman Lab journalism prediction. Our work was also a finalist for the 2021 Shadid Award.
