AAJA/diversity work

yung AAJA

In 2019, I took the helm of the Asian American Journalists Association’s young professionals network, yung AAJA.

This is a 600+ member network, which I run as a volunteer. I help early-career journalists network and manage the various anxieties that come with being young journalists.

Some of my work:

I convene regular panels where AAJA members offer advice to our members, like this one in March 2020:

I organized a session for our 2020 virtual convention, AAJA Fest. The event wasn’t recorded but approximately 100 people joined us for a panel discussion with Sisi Wei and Millie Tran. Then we moved to breakout rooms to address attendees’ specific questions.

ProPublica diversity initiatives

I run regular webinars explaining the ProPublica Local Reporting Network, like this one in fall 2019:

ONA Diversity Mentorship Program

In 2020, I helped lead the ONA Diversity Mentorship Program. In non-pandemic times, this is an in-person breakfast at the Online News Association conference. I helped adapt it virtually, collected feedback before, during and after the session, and am using it to plan for the future.

You can read more about that work on ONA’s site, and on ProPublica’s.
